The Gabriela Ortiz Composing Studio, a cornerstone of OAcademy’s Artist Diploma, continues to champion the voices of emerging composers from around the world. Designed for classically trained artists seeking to refine their craft, forge global connections, and gain insight into the modern landscape of music composition, the program has once again delivered an inspiring and transformative season.
Throughout the 6-month fellowship, 12 selected composers engaged in an intensive journey of mentorship, experimentation, and professional growth. Fellows received one-on-one feedback from an outstanding roster of international mentors, including Du Yun, Andrew Norman, Missy Mazzoli, Marcos Balter, Tyshawn Sorey, Vanessa Rose, Ted Hearne, Tonia Ko, and many more. At the heart of the program stands lead composer Gabriela Ortiz, who worked closely with the fellows during the in-person residency in Maryland.
This year, OAcademy invited guest performers Juliette Kang (violin), Clara Warnaar (vibraphone), and Zachary Feingold (bassoon) to collaborate with the cohort—workshopping, rehearsing, and recording the composers’ newly developed works. The hybrid format allowed fellows to engage both online and in person, culminating in a residency filled with live rehearsals, peer critique, and hands-on professional development.
As the program looks ahead, OAcademy is proud to open applications for its 2026 Artist Diploma. If you’re a composer ready to explore bold ideas, connect with a global community, and be mentored by some of the most respected voices in contemporary music, we invite you to apply.
