Behind the Scenes with Gabriela Ortiz’s Yanga

“You can’t call up Brahms or Beethoven and ask, ‘How do you want this to be played?’” comments violinist Rebecca Reale. Working with a living composer, like Grammy winner Gabriela Ortiz, offers a unique experience for orchestral musicians.

Last fall, we went behind the scenes with Gustavo Dudamel, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, LA Master Chorale, and Ortiz as they brought her monumental choral and orchestral work “Yanga” to life on the Walt Disney Concert Hall stage.

Inspired by the life of Mexican freedom fighter Gaspar Yanga, this vibrant composition is the title track of our second album of Ortiz’s music, following the acclaimed “Revolución diamantina”, which won three Grammys in 2024.

“I love working with Gaby—she always brings out the best in us every time she writes something new,” says Matthew Howard, principal percussionist.
